Wayne Bourgeais, 26 years old, pilot of MC Ernée, will realize his dream. This motorcycle enthusiast will be riding the Isle of Man circuit from 17 to 30 August, one of the most dangerous in the world. He will be the first Mayenne pilot to attempt the adventure.
Where does this passion for motorcycles come from?
I have been immersed in the world of motorcycling since I was a child. My parents were bikers and they often took me with them. I like speed, I’ve always wanted to run. At the beginning I went on the circuit and then I reoriented myself towards road racing because there are more sensations, it’s more committed. The Isle of Man has fascinated me since I was a kid, with 61 km and 264 curves. I’ve seen all the reports on the subject!
Have you ever done prestigious races… This is the ultimate?
I’ve been racing in competition for ten years. I have run road races all over the world: TT in the Czech Republic, Chimay in Belgium, Hengelo in the Netherlands, Frohburg in Germany… I have been applying for the Manx Grand Prix for four years now, and I was selected in December 2018. I dreamed of doing it, I’m very happy.
How did you prepare for this event, which is considered one of the most dangerous in the world?
I have already been there three times, twice as a spectator and once as a mechanic. I went back there in March for the “new comer” weekend, I did fifteen times the circuit by car with experienced drivers who pointed out to me the dangers, the traps, and taught me the names of the curves. It’s a very long, very fast circuit. My objective is to complete the tour in 20 to 21.30 minutes, driving in my category at a speed of about 170 km/h. I leave five days before the tests start. I’m going to do some more car rides to get the circuit back in my head.
Is it important to be well surrounded?
I am lucky to have Dean Harrison who has won several races at the Tourist Trophy on the Isle of Man including the senior TT, the most emblematic race! He’s going to help me to do some tricks, see where I can push a little, where I can’t take any risks… And I have one of the best teams: Billy McKinstry’s. He only takes one driver per race, and that’s me. I will have a Kawasaki ER6 -650 for the new comer B and light weight category. I have already done two races with this bike in May, I have a good feeling. It is lightweight and has a lot of power.
Are you ready for this? What are your objectives for the future?
-« Yes, I’m ready, even though I lost several friends in this race. We know the risks, that’s the game. I guess everything will be fine and I’ll be in the top ten. That would be the greatest reward! If I succeed at the Manx Grand Prix, I would like to do the Tourist Trophy, still on the Isle of Man, in May 2020. It would be the best because it’s the ultimate race. I’m also aiming for the North West and the Ulster Grand Prix in Ireland.
